Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Scholarhip Overview
For sophomores and juniors who intend to become leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks future Native American and Alaska Native leaders in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities, including land and resource management, economic development, and education.

- Award: Up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, whichever is less for one year of support per application year
Eligibility Criteria
The Udall Scholarship is by nomination through Stanford only. A committee of UAR staff and Stanford faculty will review applications and select a maximum of six applicants to nominate.
- Current sophomores or juniors (see Udall Foundation website for definitions of class standing)
- Must study a field relating to the environment or Native American / Native Alaskan health care or tribal policy
- GPA of “B” or above
- Full-time enrollment in Stanford during 2009-2010 year
- Scholars selected during their sophomore year may be renominated during the next year's competition
- Complete application
How to Apply
The following steps must be completed for an application to be considered for campus nomination:
- Register with UAR to participate in the campus competition. A username and password will be given for the Udall website, where an online application must be completed.
- Consult with Udall campus advisors regarding the content and writing of your application.
- Complete an application package consisting of:
- a signed application
- an 800-word signed essay
- official transcripts from all colleges attended
- three letters of recommendation
Submit complete application package to Undergraduate Advising and Research, 1st floor Sweet Hall.
Note: Late applications will NOT be accepted without prior approval

Your application should be your best written effort: neat, legible, and well thought-out. You should work closely
with your faculty mentors in your area of study while writing your application essays. You should take great care in
selecting of the Udall speech, legislative act, or policy statement that you will address in your essay. You may wish
to consult the following on-line archives.
The UAR also offers a set of resources to help you in the preparation of your essays and activities lists. A binder of
application materials from past Stanford Udall winners is available for consultation in the UAR offices (1st and 4th
Floors, Sweet Hall). You are strongly urged to schedule an appointment.
