Carnegie Junior Fellows Program
Program Overview
For seniors and recent graduates with the expertise that can contribute to the Carnegie Endowment’s projects such as non-proliferation, democracy building, trade, China-related issues, South Asian issues and Russian/Eurasian studies. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials.

- Award:
- One year long research assistantship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington D.C., beginning on August 1, 2010
- Monthly salary of $2,916, subject to federal, state and local taxes
- Medical, dental and life insurance benefits, as well as vacation leave. Juniors are responsible for their own housing arrangements
- $400 allowance (less taxes) to individuals relocating to the Washington, DC area
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Current Stanford seniors or alumni who have graduated within the past academic year, but have not started graduate studies
- Must have completed a significant amount of course work in international affairs, political science, economics, history, or Russian, East Asian or Middle Eastern studies
- Has consulted with a campus advisor and registered with UAR
- Complete application package
How to Apply
The following steps must be completed for an application to be considered for campus nomination:
- Register with UAR to participate in the campus competition
- Consult with your faculty recommenders and Carnegie campus advisors regarding the content and writing of your application.
- Complete application package consisting of:
- Application form
- 1-2 page resume (must include telephone, address, email, and work experience)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Undergraduate transcript (unofficial is accepted)
- One page essay (double spaced) on why you would like to become a Junior Fellow
- Three page essay (maximum), double spaced, on one of the following topics
Submit complete application package to Undergraduate Advising and Research, 1st floor Sweet Hall.
Note: Late applications will NOT be accepted without prior approval
Selection Process
The Carnegie Junior Fellows Program is by nomination through Stanford only. A committee of UAR staff and Stanford faculty will review applications and select a maximum of two applicants. These two campus nominees will be interviewed by the Carnegie review board during February and early March. Final selections will be made and candidates notified on March 31, 2010.
