Summer Research College (SRC)
SRC 2008 will be housed in Lantana
and Castaño.
What Is SRC?
Summer Research College (SRC) is an eight- or ten-week summer residential program managed for students participating in departmental research programs and other faculty-supervised research endeavors.
SRC aims to foster close intellectual and social contact among students and faculty in an interdisciplinary residential community. During the day, students work with faculty advisors and research groups in Stanford campus research facilities. Evenings and on weekends, they enjoy opportunities to share research discussions, dinners with faculty guests, social and cultural activities and informal gatherings with fellow researchers.
The SRC staff and residents plan a variety of academic, social and cultural events. Only SRC residents attend SRC social and cultural events while SRC academic events are open to the entire Stanford community on a space-available basis. Event highlights include evening workshops (Managing Your Mentor, Effective Poster Presentations, Writing Grant Proposals) and a graduate student panel on the realities of graduate school.
Note that SRC is not a source of funding for summer research; it is a residential program intended to enrich undergraduates’ summer research experience. Many residents of SRC obtain funding through their departments or a Major grant from UAR.
- For more information on funding available for the support of summer undergraduate research, please visit Research Opportunities.
Eligibility
SRC is intended to support students committed to participating in a full-time, faculty-supervised research endeavor for a minimum of eight weeks beginning Monday, June 23, 2008. All students must meet the eligibility requirements set by Housing Assignments.
Among the students who apply to Summer Research College, students will be admitted in the following order:
- Stanford students conducting full-time, Stanford faculty-mentored research
- Current Lantana / Castaño residents
- All other interested students
How to Apply
To apply:
1. Students must log onto Axess and select Manzanita (Lantana / Castaño) as their first choice for summer housing. The Housing Assignments website will have more information (updated in April).
2. Students conducting full-time, Stanford faculty-mentored research must ALSO indicate their interest in SRC by filling out the form at the Summer Research College request page.
Admission to SRC: UAR will review the list of students who have applied, admitting students according to their eligibility. Students requesting disability accommodations should follow the procedures and deadlines published by Housing Assignments.
Notification: Students will receive notification of their housing assignment according to the schedule published by Housing Assignments. Room assignments within SRC will be conducted through an in-house drawing late Spring quarter.

Money Matters
Room, board, house dues, living expenses and other academic expenses are paid by the student. Students are responsible for paying their university summer bill, which will include any other academic expenses they incur.
- Housing: For summer room rates, see the Housing Assignments room rates.
- Dining: Students must purchase a meal plan. For summer meal plan rates, see the Stanford Dining website for summer meal plan rates.
- House dues: Summer house dues will be $50.
SRC Policies
Student Conduct
Summer Research College is designed to be an intellectually stimulating and rewarding experience. When gathering in lounges and dorm rooms, all students are expected to respect the rights of fellow residents to a clean, reasonably quiet environment.
As during the regular academic year, student conduct is guided by the Fundamental Standard. All Stanford policies about maintaining a drug-free campus and the legal drinking age remain in effect. In addition, the policy on alcohol in common areas may be more restrictive than during the academic year.
Student Employment and Course Work
Students in SRC have a unique opportunity to engage in focused, full-time research and are expected to be fully committed to this experience.
- Students funded by VPUE Faculty Grant, departmental research program, a Major or Chappell Lougee Grant with stipends may
- register for a maximum of five units during the summer
- work a maximum of ten hours per week outside their summer research, regardless of whether they live in SRC
- Students funded by departments or faculty members must check with your department and faculty member regarding their policies, which may be stricter than UAR.
Housing Policies
SRC participants are bound by all Residence Agreement policies. For a more detailed description of Residence Agreements, visit the Housing Assignments website.
It is a violation of the Residence Agreement to destroy or otherwise damage or dispose of any University property. SRC residents are responsible for the condition of their assigned rooms and will be charged for any room damages. Upon arrival, students will be issued room and entrance keys. Lost or damaged keys should be reported immediately to the residence office. Keys may not be duplicated, and a nonuniversity locksmith may not alter or repair a lock.
SRC students are responsible for any negligence or willful misconduct that results in bodily injury or property damage to themselves, others or Stanford University.
- Parking: If you plan to park on campus during the summer, you may purchase a residence-parking permit. If you have questions regarding parking on campus, visit the Parking and Transportation Services website.
- Phone: Summer Research College will not provide a phone line for students. Students must pay a connection fee and a service charge for phone service and must provide their own phone. Students need to make sure to deactivate service by the end of the SRC term. For more information on phone service, students should read the ITSS Guide to Student Telephone, Long Distance and Cable TV Services.
- Computers: SRC will have a computer cluster in Lantana and Castaño and a Resident Computer Consultant (RCC) will be available to assist with computing questions. Students who wish to have an in-room network connection need to register through Residential Computing, indicating their SRC room number. For configuration instructions and to register, see the Residential Computing website.
SRC FAQs
Q: What does SRC really mean? I'm doing research this summer, but I'm not living in Manzanita. Am I part of SRC?
A: No, you are not. SRC stands for Summer Research College and includes those students living in Manzanita. However, many SRC academic events (including the academic workshops), may be open to the entire campus community, so you can still consider attending these events.
Q: I'm not doing research this summer. If I'm assigned to Manzanita, am I in SRC?
A: Yes, you are. Think of SRC as a research theme house. Most of the residents will be conducting research, but some may not be. Either way, ALL Lantana / Castano residents are considered part of SRC and can attend SRC events.
Q: Do I have to live in SRC if I am doing research this summer?
A: No. SRC is one of many housing options, including Mirrilees and off-campus housing. SRC has weekly academic workshops and faculty dinners designed to enrich the research experience. Many students find it very supportive to live in a residence with fellow researchers when they are conducting research 40 hours a week. This is why we encourage undergraduate researchers to consider SRC. However, it is not required.
Q: I do not attend Stanford, but I will be conducting research at Stanford over the summer. Can I live in SRC?
A: You must meet the eligibility requirements set by Housing Assignments, which includes enrolling in the Summer Visitor Program for a minimum of three units in order to be eligible for SRC housing.
Alternatively, you may be eligible for on-campus housing through Conference Services. That office primarily houses conference attendees and individual guests who are affiliated with Stanford over the summer, but not enrolled as students.
