Who is eligible to participate in SIMS?
All Stanford sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply to SIMS.
Are there academic prerequisites?
No. SIMS is designed to provide different students with different types of experiences. Some SIMS students may already be applying to medical school, while others may seek a shadowing experience to help them decide whether or not to pursue a health profession. You can work with your physician mentor to establish a mentoring relationship that fits your goals.
Are there required immunizations?
Yes. Before you begin shadowing, you must provide proof of a negative TB skin test within the last 12 months, as well as MMR, varicella, and hepatitis B vaccinations. Please note that the hepatitis B vaccination series takes 6 months to complete, so you may have to apply to SIMS in the future if you do not have this vaccination already.
Do I need to register for SIMS on Axess?
Yes. After you are accepted to the SIMS program, you must register for a 1-unit CR/NC course. This course will count toward your 20-unit total. To receive credit for the course, you must meet with your mentor on at least four occasions and write a reflective 1-page essay at the end of the quarter.
Will I receive any training prior to shadowing?
After you are accepted to the SIMS program, you must attend the mandatory orientation session that describes the SIMS requirements, hospital policies, and appropriate conduct and attire.
What should I do if I have to miss a meeting with my physician mentor?
If you are unable to make a scheduled shadowing session, please notify your physician mentor in advance and reschedule.
Who is in charge of the program?
SIMS is advised by the School of Medicine and coordinated by the Stanford Premedical Association and Undergraduate Advising and Research. Please feel free to contact the SIMS Student Coordinator with questions or comments.
