Arts Intensive: For Faculty and Administrators

Arts Intensive Overview

The Arts Intensive Program (AI) is a new summer opportunity for undergrads commencing in September 2009. AI invites Stanford students to return to the campus before the start of the Autumn Quarter to participate in a two-week intensive course in arts practice.

Taught in the mode of a conservatory with an emphasis on practical training, these courses meet daily with certain courses culminating in a final performance, showcase, or exhibition of student work. The emphasis in AI is on practical learning and on embodied knowledge - knowledge garnered through actual experience.

AI is targeted at rising juniors and seniors, and will benefit not only students with majors in the arts or students intent on artistic careers but also those from other disciplines. AI will offer the potential for rigorous and focused study in the arts as students will have the benefit of concentrating solely on their art for that period of time.

Who are the instructors?

Eligible instructors for AI include Stanford academic council faculty, artists-in-residence, and lecturers. In addition, there will be one class taught each year by a visiting artist. A call for course proposals was sent to all arts department faculty and lecturers on October 1st, 2009.  A faculty review committee chaired by Professor Harry J. Elam, Jr. Professor of Drama and Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education selected from among courses submitted through the call for proposals.

We are particularly interested in courses that are interdisciplinary and collaborative across the arts.  We are also interested in courses that will be open to, and will attract, a wide range of students and that can potentially culminate in a project or performance at the end of the course period.

What is required in an AI course proposal?

An AI course proposal should include a syllabus for the course as well as a one-page description of the course that discusses its pedagogical objectives. This statement should also consider the expected outcomes for the students in this course. Instructors should describe any final showcase or culminating project in their course and what form it will take. Proposals were due by email to Georgina Hernandez, Arts Intensive Administrator, at ghclarke@stanford.edu on or before November 1, 2009.

How are the students selected?

Student enrollment will be capped at twelve but may enlarge or decrease at the discretion of the faculty.  The intent is to ensure an intensive studio experience within each course with an appropriate class size and composition. Faculty will select students for their course from online applications submitted each Spring for the upcoming September Arts Intensive session.
