Rachel Antonsen '11

Subjects: Arabic & German

Major: History

Rachel is fascinated by all aspects of language learning including the learner's brain and culture, the teacher's brain and culture, and the brains and cultures of those who interact with them in daily life. She believes that learning foreign languages is one possible solution to the rampant cultural conflict that plagues societies. She has studied German for the past 6 years, and has lived in Germany two times--once for an intensive philosophy course and once to work on immigrant issues in Frankfurt am Main. She began studying Arabic in summer 2007 at the UC Berkeley intensive program, and returned to the fray in summer 2008 at the Middlebury Arabic School. She spent this summer in Cairo through the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA)--a program for advanced Arabic students affiliated with the American University in Cairo. She adores the work of Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Nizar Qabani, and Bayram Al-Tunisi among others. She also recommends authors Erich Kästner, Ludwig Tieck, Yoko Tawada and Emine Özdamar (German) and song phenomena Umm Kulthum, Fayrouz, Abd al-Halim Hafiz, Magda Rumi etc. (Arabic)--please ask if you want a more complete list. Besides these things she enjoys hiking, social dance, violin and recreational speaking.
