Fall 2009 IHUM Information
Announcements
Wednesday, October 21
Can you believe that it's almost time to start thinking about winter and even spring quarter?
IHUM's Open House for winter/spring courses is just around the corner, taking place in Wallenberg Hall (Bldg. 160) on November 18th, from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. At this event, teaching teams (faculty and postdoctoral fellows) for each IHUM course will be available with syllabi and the course texts to answer any and all questions you might have about the various courses. Cookies will be served (in abundance)!
While your fall quarter IHUM is an interdisciplinary course, the winter/spring sequences are based in particular disciplines (history, classics, religious studies, etc.). As you begin to consider what disciplines and courses intrigue you, keep in mind that you are planning for the next two quarters. The winter/spring IHUM is a disciplinary sequence and you are expected to stay with the same lecture in the spring--although you will be able to petition to change your section at the beginning of spring quarter. On our website, and at the open house, we will make available a winter/spring course advising guide that will indicate which of the IHUM courses conflict with the some of the main prerequisites (such as Economics 1 or CS 160).
Here are some key dates:
Wednesday, November 18, 5 pm: IHUM winter course preference forms open
Wednesday, November 18, 6-8:30 pm: IHUM Open House
Friday, December 4, 5 pm: IHUM winter course preference forms close
Friday, December 11, 5 pm: IHUM winter assignments posted; IHUM winter course/section petitions open
Thursday, December 17, 12 pm: IHUM winter course/section petitions close
Thursday, December 17, no later than 5 pm: IHUM posts petition results
Just as in the fall, we will have a week of petitions during the first week of winter quarter. More on that later!
We hope that you are all enjoying your fall quarter IHUM courses!
Monday, August 17
Happy Monday, IHUM Students! Today you are able to check your IHUM assignment on our Enrollment and Course Change Information page. You can also confirm this assignment on Axess, the system you'll be using to manage all of your course enrollments and other administrative information. You should check your study list there and ensure that it matches up with what you see on our site. You should see two entries: one for the discussion section (which carries the 4 units), and one for the lecture.
Do note that you are not able to add, remove, or change your IHUM assignment yourself. We manage enrollment for IHUM centrally. Chances are, though, that your IHUM assignment doesn't work with the schedule you may be putting together. Not to fear! Starting on Tuesday, September 15, we'll be opening online forms that will either allow you to request a change just to your discussion section (i.e. you want to remain in the same course overall), or to your entire IHUM assignment. We open them almost a week before classes start, but we will start processing them once a day starting the Sunday before classes start (September 20). You'll have until the end of the first week of classes to finalize your IHUM assignment.
But this is all down the line a bit, and we'll send out emails about this stuff later. Just know that you shouldn't worry about your IHUM course and/or section time, because they can be changed.
We're looking forward to meeting you all!

Congratulations, incoming freshmen!
By now you have submitted your preferences for IHUM and SLE. We'll be processing the data and we'll let you know of your IHUM or SLE assignment on August 17th.
